What a Load of Rubbish

20/10/25, 11:00

World Clean Up Day was on 20th September and the Cap Estate Association organised a major clean up day across all zones in Cap Estate.

World Clean Up Day was on 20 th September and the Cap Estate Association organised a major clean up day across all zones in Cap Estate. We all know that litter is an perpetual problem that blights the beautiful area we live in and this clean up intended to show what we can achieve as a community working together.

We were delighted to have support from 50 volunteers and also are very grateful to Cabot St Lucia, Sandals Golf and Country Club and The Body Holiday who all loaned us staff members to work alongside residents. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part.

We are also thankful to Mr Mathurin of SLWMA and the waste collectors who had a lot more rubbish to collect the following Monday.

The day started early with the first zone kicking off at 6.30am. Within an hour 20 large sacksful had been collected just from that one zone.

In total, we filled around 250 large sacks with items like plastic bottles, takeaway containers, clothing, tin cans, plastic bags etc. Some larger items included plastic chairs, tyres.

The amount of waste collected in a short period of time was a huge success. It was a great community effort and achieved a meaningful and visible impact.

At the same time, the volume of rubbish we collected is sad, as despite great work by the teams, we know we only scratched the surface.

The Cap Estate Association will be planning further events and looking at other ways we can improve the environment of Cap Estate. If you want to get involved or have ideas on what could be done, please contact our Environment Lead, Derek Hoddinott hoddid@yahoo.co.uk
